TO "SMOKEY"

She came from a cage in the shelter
To be part of my life and my home,
To replace the cat that had left me
So I wouldn't feel so alone.
Her fur is the color of smoke
And her eyes are a beautiful gold.
I wish I could know her life story
But I guess that will never he told.
Did you sleep on the bed of your owner
And purr when she patted your head?
Did you run to your dish in the kitchen
When you knew it was time to be fed?
Did you have a soft lap to curl up on
And relax in a nap with a sigh?
Did you Iove to look out of a window
To see a strange world passing by?
Now you fit so well into my lifestyle
I no longer feel so alone;
You've filled up that empty place in my heart
And turned my house into a home!

ADOPTION

Charming ball of calico,
Just a tiny kitty,
Left to face. the world alone;
Some folks have no pity.

Tummy's aching for some food,
Legs can hardly stand;
Arched up back and pleading eyes. . .
Where's a kindly hand?

Soft and cuddly ball of fur,
Conquest, your design.
All you need is one soft heart,
And you've captured mine.

BRING THE PRISONER FORWARD

Listen, my little kitten.
Pay attention, do.
I want to know who made this mess,
Confess now, was it you?

I might forgive your mischief,
Oh, foolish careless youth,
If you'd exhibit some regret
And a respect for truth.

How can you look so blameless
With proof still in your claws?
Your purring gets you nowhere,
Nor do your soft, small paws.

Ah, well, I must consider
That these are your "salad days,"
And as an older, wiser cat
Perhaps you'll mend your ways...???

THE CAT AND I

We have been together in other lives -
the cat and I.

Today he jumps up
and heavies himself onto my lap.
gazes at me with knowing eyes,
then settles to dream...

My mind drifts...
In Salem, winter is as bleak as our lives.
The weight of ice cracks strong trees.
His jet fur is glossy against snow,
   eyes green as peridots.
I sew to earn enough to feed us
   and we bother no one.
   Our only offense is seeing
   what others cannot see.
We are hunted in the wretched cold
   but want no fire
   to warm us to death...

In sleepy heat of the Pharoh's Egypt
he and I walk by the Nile
where I have been sent for water.
We cool our feet where papyrus grows
and lilies bloom as blue as his eyes.
My eyes are rimmed with kohl
   to look like his -
his fur is dusky as my skin.
He catches rats in our fields of grain
and is sacred to my people.
   A warm breeze envelops us
   together forever...

He awakes, stretches
urgently cleans a hind paw -
and deep in his tongue-washed fur
I smell hot stones of Cheops.

CATching MR. WEBSTER

Oh, Felis domesticat!
As you repose on open page
Looking smug, content and sage
What does Mr. Webster say?
CATastrophe: an apostrophe in the shape of a cat
CATacomb: (1) feline grooming tool; (2) cat's tongue
Oh, now really! Does he say that?
Sounds more like words defined by CAT...
  CATalog: a rustic scratching post
  CATerpillar: an elegant scratching post
Oh, dear! There's more!
Mr. Cat has words in store...
CAThead: area aboard ship for litter box
  CATkin: feline relation
  CATsup: dinnertime for felines
Oh, Mr. Cat! That's quite enough
Of all that rather silly stuff.
So now you've left the page in place
A cat hair neatly marks your space
Now one word I must define
Referring to that smug feline
CAT: a clever, charming, caring friend

---CATS---

Tumbling and racing and climbing the chairs
And tiny ones climbing the drapes and the stairs
Then out to the kitchen for something to eat---
WHOOPS! ---to the sand box with quick Iittle feet!

There they go racing, their toys to pursue
Our throw rugs go flying and land all askew!
Then suddenly tired and cuddly and sweet
They're happily curled and snug at your feet!

CLEANLINESSlS NEXT TO...

Just as I had passed my tongue
Over every inch of me;
Stroked, brushed, rubbed, scoured,
Cleaned, burnished, and polished to an even sleekness,
You touched me,
And now it's to do
All over again.

KITTEN in a CUPBOARD

Don't bother to
  Plead,
    Coax,
      Cajole,
        Or threaten me.
          I'm not listening
            Anyway.
          I know howI got
        Up.
      The trick,
    I find,
  Is getting
Down.

DOUBLE RESCUE

I pushed through the snowstorm,
  Hugging my sorrow
Not caring if I saw
  A tomorrow.
I thought of my life
  And how it had soured
When I came on a door
Where a cat crouched and cowered.
It opened its mouth
  And gave a faint cry.
I'd met with a creature
  More wretched than I.
Its eyes met mine and
  Silently pleaded
For the love and comfort it
  Sorely needed.
With no more thought,
  I scooped it high
Slipped it into my coat
  To warm and dry.
It nestled there close,
  A wet ball of fur
And soon it gave off
  A hoarse rusty purr.
It healed my heart
  That I thought broken
And, so with no word
  Having been spoken,

We went home, together!

CALLING DR. FELIS!

Calling Dr. Felis!

A house call I must make
Within there is a broken heart
I must not let it break!

I'll administer the medicine
Some purrs and rubs for sure
Add in a few good kitty-hugs Voila! The perfect cure!

Before I go, I'll surely add
A last feline caress
But, this wlll please my patient, too:
My bills cause no distress!

EBONY

The pants in our family are fur-lined
And worm by "Ebony."
"Ebony" is black, and beautiful!
Came to us out of nowhere,
Decided we'd do, and preempted my easy chair.
Spoiled rotten, "Ebony" is,
Thinks no means YES!
My wife puts Accent on His food,
Waits on Him hand and paw.
"Ebony" prefers her lap to mine,
But when He's happy, I'm happy,
That's true love, My friend.
Perhaps in the next life "Ebony" arnd I will change places.
That would be nice.
Maybe I'll get my easy chair
Back again.

THE FERN EATER

Me?
Do such a thing?
Not chewing anything.
Just adjusting my whiskers.
I'm not one for salads,
Anyway.
What am I doing?
Just sitting here
Contemplating the fern,
And watching it self-destruct.

GREY SAM

He slips like a shadow into the dusk,
All grey, silent, immovable
Under the dark hedge.
Only a glint of emerald
As he blinks at the fireflies
Shows where Grey Sam is hiding.

On a bright day strong winds are blowing.
Sam, a grey mound at the window,
Tail tip quivering.
Remembers kittenhood
When he chased the whirling leaves
And raced the wind.

A LOVE STORY--KITTEN& PUPPY

They were sitting close together on a lovely old settee,
While shadows from the fireplace danced around them merrily;
His hair was black and curly, and he had it combed just so.
Her hair was blonde and silky, and she wore a bright red bow.
His big brown eyes were misty, as he looked at her with pride,
She gazed at him with worship, which her green eyes could not hide.
She snuggled up beside him, and nibbled at his ear,
Outside the wind was howling, but they didn't seem to hear.
He slapped at her real gently and kissed her on the head,
The fire was slowly dying, they'd soon have to go to bed.
But now they were contented, as side by side they sat
He, a Poodie dog, and her, a Persian cat.

NEW WORLD

Who knows about sorrow, feels deep down the pain
Knows about hardship and labor in vain?
It isn't just humans who suffer despair
Brought on by lack of compassion and care.
All living creatures merit value and love
For eyes are watching from up above.
Ignorance won't change fate one bit
Let's make it better and dare to admit
That man must awaken and leave his dark hole
What he will save will be his own soul.

ODE TO MY CAT

She's my alarm clock in the morning,
She's my friend and companion at night
And in all the in-between times
She's never out of my sight.
It's such a lovely feeling
To know she depends on me
For her food and warmth and shelter
So she gives me her love to see.
She plays with her toys; plays hide and seek
She's become the boss of the house!
Yet she has more fun with a walnut shell
Than she does with a catnip mouse!
The pleasure she gives me is a treasure
She greets me when I come in the door.
She seems to say "I've been lonesome so
Please don't go out anymore!"
She's my delight, my friend and my prankster
She pounces and jumps up real high
For a ball of yarn or a wiggly string
With a purr or a soft little cry.
She washes her face after eating.
Keeps her striped fur clean and sleek.
Jumps on my lap for approval and then
Curls herself up for her sleep.
So I wouldn't give up my kitty
For the world and all of its' gold.
'Cause if my kitty weren't with me
This world would be awfully cold!

ODE TO PET PRIDE

I'm in my new home,
And I think that it's great.
My owner is kind,
She's a real neat roommate.
I want you to know,
Though I'm in a new place.
The fine memories of you,
I will never erase.
I appreciate the way,
You treated me with kid gloves.
It taught me to know,
The world is filled with LOVE.
I'm not just a cat,
I'm someone's new pet.
A feeling I like
On this you can bet.
I thank you for putting this feeling inside,
I truly do feel in my heart, PET PRIDE!

A QUESTION OF MERCY

Was "dominion over" intended to mean
"Free to exploit?"
Should not "dominion over" be tempered
With qualites of Mercy and Freedom?
Did not the blinded rabbit
Will to see?...The ravaged dog
Or cat or rat, perchance volunteered,
Did he? And we, "created in the image of God"
Ignore their anguished cries!
In the image af God, are we?
See the answer in their dying eyes!

A SILENT WORLD

She's pure white, a snowy white,
no other colors mar her fur.
Two clear, sky blue eyes see movement,
two perked ears hear nothing.

The bright sun shining through a window
warms the carpet where she sleeps.
She feels vibrations on the floor,
and startled looks to the one approaching.

So affectionate, she purrs loudly,
loves to be held in a lap.
Happy and healthy, she's adapted.
Her hearing impairment easily overcome.

STORM METAMORPHOSIS

The black panther of the storm creeps through the windynight.
Like the shadows that glide across the moon in its flight.
The soul of the shrieking wind wails out its lonely cry.
Even the mountainous craigs seem to echo its sob.
All around the intense darkness begins to throb,
And suddenly erupts into the sound of one huge purr.
Somewhere, on a hillside, the clock in the tower
Is heard to strike the witching hour.
The storm-tossed trees wave their branches like arms on high.
A flash of heat-lightning rents the angry sky,
And out of its luminous heart there appear I,
Wearing a ring of fire and wrapped in a cloak of fur.

THEIR ENGINES
DRIVE THE SUMMER
WITH THEIR PURR

Their engines drive the summer with their purr;
Weathers are stirred, airs shift
Because the drift of catsleep sound persuades,
In everglades of floral-nap Arabian rug,
The snug-sounds sleep,
They keep a soul's contentment in their hum;
They drum the inner ear with summer dream,
Pure honeyed cream they come and go
As cat dreams, supple, ample, simple, sough
And flow.
Their vibrant marrows simmer, swarm and seep,
A beehive voice that sure and certain summons
Sleep.
A gentle heat pervades and softly shakes
With every outpoured thrum the hummed cat makes,
His bones keep bees
They hive each lung
And thrived in August flesh are summer-sung.
Then, spent,
The cat, all-innocent, awakes,
The humming breaks to pieces in his blood,
The floodtide stops,
The brimming feast he fed upon
But did not know as feast
Is inner-eaten gone, and lost in calm,
The cool cat strides taking his hot hive hid
And swift, sure, soft, and syrup-fleet
Uncoils his calm, flint-sparks his eyes,
Restarts his motor
In the middle
Of the street.

SYMBIOSIS

My Poki curls beneath the light
As if she had a perfect right
To settle down there for the night.
She hasn't felt a need to ask
If this is where a cat may bask.
I want to work right where I found her
But I guess I'll have to work around her--
Reasoning doesn't work with her;
I've tried but all she does is purr.
In sixteen years of nights and days,
It seems we've learned each other's ways
Where Poki settles, Poki stays.

WAKE UP CALL

There's a kitty sitting
Down at the end of the bed--
Watching, wond'ring--
Waiting to be fed.
Whisking, frisking,
She runs up our backs,
Returns to our feet
Making mock attacks.
Up again she creeps,
Peering at our faces.
She touches my nose,
Then away she races.
"Okay, little puss, I'll get up," I say,
As our furry alarm clock
Continues to play.

They keep inside their paws.
Their claws are not in view,
So this cannot be true!

Unless my cat's deformed.
lf cats were uninhibited,
They'd keep their claws exhibited. ...
