CAT IDEAS

What times does she remember, this deep mysterious cat?
Perhaps she graced a castle and on a famous throne she sat.
Perhaps her thoughts drift fondly, e'er so once and awhile
To ancient times of Egypt when she beheld the Nile.
Perhaps she thinks of Salem when she beheld some stew
When some cruel and frightend townfalk called it witches brew.
Perhaps with Chris Colombus she charted foreign seas
And really it was her who discovered America, if you please.
Was Ben Franklin all alone with his kite and with his key?
Or was it she in fact who invented electricity?
There are communications now that seem to use just air
Is this interpretation of her deep clairvoyant stare?
Cats had their part in history, as all cat lovers know
Perhaps all mens' inventions were cat ideas long ago.
They say the ape began it, leaving mankind in his wake
From whence the cat I wonder, who did this creature make?
We'll never hear the answer in the recess of her mind
But if she dared to tell us, it's the angel you will find.

COLLAR, MY SON

There is a favorite, special cat
Who has his place today
Deep inside my heart and soul
Although he's passed away.

I sometimes see his shadow.
I often hear his purr.
I walk into the kitchen
And feel his brush of fur.

I look and often see him
Sleeping soundly in his chair.
I look again, quite startled
To find he isn't there.

Yes, my son, you left me
Several years have passed
But your spirit stays beside me
Your gift to me, your last.

COMMENTARY

I have sincere sympathy
for all those folks who are deprived
of starting and ending each day
with a purr.

COMMUNICATION

Why does the human need so much material translated
into so many different languages
When obviously the cat understands them all.
Isn't language merely the means by which we communicate
our thought pictures and ideas?
Since the cat can understand all of them, is she
not reading our very souls?

DADDY'S CAT

Daddy's asleep now in his favorite chair,
He looks very lonely, just lying there;
His lap looks so empty, he breathes a deep sigh.
Quick, jump, little kitty, sing your purr lullaby.
They say Daddy was not a cat person before,
That is, until you came through the door.
Now he can't go to sleep without you very near,
With your soft, velvet paw and your purr full of cheer.
Settle in little kitty, cuddle up, snuggle tight,
For Daddy needs love, especially this night;
It's been a hard day at his job, don't you know,
And he's tired and worn from the strife and the woe,
So give him your best, he needs it just now,
Comfort him, kitty, and give him your vow
To always be near him, I know in your heart
You'll love him forever 'til death do you part.

ENTREATY

Our Father, we know that you are busy
But as the Creator of this world it must anger you
To see the disregard for life.
We see the lack of esteem for humans
What does this mean for the poor animal
Who depends so deeply on those same beings.

Please, our Father, grant the animals a special place
In your kingdom of Heaven
For they have been so mistreated
On this earth.

GOD'S LITTLE ANGEL

Hark, all persons, lend an ear
I've something I must make real clear.
Why do you think that cats are here?
But to soothe and calm us, end our fear.

It's said that God sits on his throne,
At his feet a cat is sleeping prone.
Then how can you ever feel alone
Knowing God's angel is in your home.

HOW MANY CATS?

There once was a time when I had just one cat
But he needed a friend and so that was that.
But when the friend came, she invited her brother;
In less than a month, followed "Fifi," their mother.
Four cats now - that's the end I say
But I encountered a litter in my garage one day.
I found excellent homes for kits one, two and three,
But kit number four and Mom stayed on with me.
Kept indoors, all neutered - my family six strong;
I said - NO MORE - but not for long.
"June" was abandoned right near my job.
The day she was spayed, along came "Bob."
Well this all took place some years back
Now how many cats? I stopped keeping track.
I spend hours each day giving scratches and pats,
Some people have rugs; I have wall-to-wall cats!

LULLABY

Sometimes you need real courage
Just to make it through the day.
Sometimes you feel so lonely
Like the world has gone away.
Sometimes you cry for nothing
You're sad and don't know why.
That's when you need your friend to sing
His sweet, purr lullaby.
You stroke his fur so softly
While he stares into your eyes.
He knows the secrets of your soul
He lifts your world's disguise.
He sees you for who you are
Like no one ever could.
You know there's bad inside you but
He only see the good.
Now there's peace within you
All the hurt has gone away.
Thanks to the magic spell he wove
Of love, pure love today.

PUSSYCAT, PUSSYCAT

"Pussycat, pussycat, where did you go?"
"Having a snack in the kitchen you know."
"I looked for you there not five minutes ago."
"But that was my naptime, by now you should know."
"Before that I looked for you on your dear chair."
"Had you looked in the bedroom, you'd have found me there"
"Pussy, my dear, I went there just before."
"But Mom, you did not look behind of the door."
"Yes, I did, Pussy, I looked high and low."
"I laid in the window to catch the sun's glow."
"Pussycat, dearest, I checked every spot."
"You weren't in any, I know you were not!"
"But yes, I was Mom, each and every one"
"I was just having some pussycat fun!!!"

ROULETTE

I saw you there, eyes pleading.
Was it really "that" long ago?
Our eyes met; I looked away.
I left to consider your adoption.
I returned quickly and took you home,
Fearing reproach from the cat gang.
But you were accepted without question
And became the ruler of the house.
You became my constant escort.
You went to work with me each day
And kept me company during all my tasks.
Time passed, did the years fly by?
You walked slower, your vision dimmed,
Your heart needed constant medication.
Still you loved to work with me,
Enjoying our time together.
That fatal day came, your heart failed.
I gave you the only thing I could -
Release from suffering in eternal sleep.
Your remains are in an urn in my office.
It seems fitting as that was your domain.
Months have passed but I still expect to see you
When I walk from place to place.
Then I remember my heartbreak
And loneliness engulfs me.
Your spirit lives within me
But it can't fill the void left by your loss.

SILENCE

She walked softly across the room
Lightly, on padded feet
Stealthily.
Her eyes carry a hint of faraway times.
She's simply crossing the room
Going from here to there
But yet there's something deeper
More profound behind that look she carries
Her tail unfurled, plumed, dignified
Touching almost the top of her head.
She seem to hear something as she walks along,
To me there is only silence.
I search my soul but hear nothing.
I ask her what she hears, what she recalls
She simply seems to smile but no words
leave her mouth in response
She passes on her way, still listening
to the silence.

YOUR SPECIAL ANGEL

Death is beautiful...
At least it is for me.
But I see you crying for me and
I want to touch your face with my soft paw
And tell you that I am still with you.
You just can't see me now;
Or feel my touch
Or hear my purr.
I can run and jump and play
just like I did as a kitten
Before my body was in pain
Hurting from the ravages of time.
How good it feels to be in this new world
Where there is no disease, no cruelty, no hurt.
But my heart aches for you.
I long to tell you that I am free;
I long for your caress.
One day we will be together again
United for all eternity.
Until then, talk to me with your soul
I will always be with you
As your own special angel.

SUGAR

You came into my life when I had no one
You purred away my loneliness
You made me laugh at your antics
You taught me unrestricted love.
Years passed, we grew older
You and I so close, so in touch.
You grew sick and I couldn't save you
Miracles like that rarely happen
At least not to me.
I carried you outside to see the sun
And you died in it's warmth in my arms
Your spirit will live on within me
Your lessons will remain learned
Dare I give this love to another?
Your answer, use the courage I taught you.

THERE'S NO TIME LEFT

In these days of rush and worry
Everything is hurry, scurry.
Who will take the time to care?
Who will take the time to share?

His coat is motley, eyes are blue
Some call him ugly, that's not true.
But dirty, starving, he's in dispair
Who will take the time to care?
His pleading eyes will make you cry
He needs you now or he will die.
Help PET PRIDE help him, make him well
Give him a future...not this hell.

We see his sad and pleading eyes
We try to end his lonely cries.
Help PET PRIDE help him, please do give
He needs us now...just to live.

TRANQUILITY

Oh loving puss, come hither and purr
Let me stroke your soft, warm fur.
Let me gaze into your loving eyes
How great their depth...how very wise.

What comfort your dear presence brings
I forget all sad, unhappy things.
Let no man live without this peace
Proof that God's wonders never cease.

IN TROUBLE ?

When all the world has left you
Alone, and in a vat
Who will give you comfort
But your beloved friend, your cat.

He'll lick your face and love you
While you are in this pickle
And make you wonder why all men
Are positively fickle.

And when this time is ended
And when the brine is through
He'll still be there awaiting
With a purr for pickled you!

THE WAITRESS

(Sung to "Row, row, row...")

Feed, feed, feed my cat
Morning, noon and night
He won't eat this, he won't eat that
I am in a plight!
Tuna, mackeral, kidney, beef
I have tried each one
Or does he want a chicken breast
Baked gently 'til it's done?
No matter what I serve my cat
He begins to pout
I'm going to print a menu so
He just can point it out!

WINTER YEARS

I am alone in the winter of my life.
My kin are grown and far away
My body crumbles, my limbs ache
I yearn the most trite conversation.
Who cares for me now as I have cared
My youth spent on others' needs.
I prayed to God for His divine guidance
And He has felt my sorrow.
My love is now returned tenfold
With compassionate eyes that share my pain.
My solitude was ended by a purr.

Thank you, Lord for giving me
A glimpse of heaven which awaits
And for providing me my outlet for affection
One who needs me every day and gives me the
Will to weather the storms of my winter.
